Spain’s Lavender Season is Coming: Why a Balloon Flight is a Must-Do

If you’ve ever talked to me about summer in Spain, you know I have a soft spot for Brihuega. While most travelers are heading to the coast in July, I find myself drawn back to the province of Guadalajara. Why? Because for a few fleeting weeks, the world turns violet.

Many people ask me: "Carol, is it really worth the early wake-up call to see the lavender?" My answer is always the same: Only if you see it from the sky.

Why a Balloon Flight is My Personal "Must-Do"

I’ve walked through the fields, and yes, it’s beautiful. But floating over them? That is a different story entirely. Here is why I believe a balloon flight is the only way to truly experience this season:

The Scent from Above: This is my favorite part. As the sun begins to warm the earth, the aroma of millions of lavender stalks rises in a gentle thermal wave. You aren't just looking at the flowers; you are literally breathing in the essence of the Spanish summer.

Geometric Perfection: From the ground, you see rows of plants. From a wicker basket at 1,000 feet, you see a masterpiece of geometry, perfect purple lines stretching toward the horizon, interrupted only by ancient stone oaks.

The Escape from the Crowds: Let’s be honest, the secret is out. Brihuega can get busy on summer weekends. But up there, in the silence of the clouds, it’s just you and the wind. It’s the ultimate "boutique" luxury.

The Ritual: From Dawn to Cava

This experience, which I’ve carefully vetted for my guests, isn’t just about the flight. It’s about the whole morning ritual:

1. The Ascent: Watching the balloons inflate in the pre-dawn mist is hypnotic.

2. The One-Hour Flight: A gentle drift over the rhythmic, violet heart of La Alcarria.

3. The Celebration: Landing is followed by a traditional Cava toast and a rustic countryside brunch (almuerzo campestre) featuring handpicked local artisanal products.

4. The Memories: You’ll receive a flight diploma and, most importantly, a complete video and photo report, so you can put your phone away and just be present.

Carol’s Insider Advice

The Window: This magic only happens in June, July, and August.

What to Wear: Even in July, the Spanish plateau is fresh at 6:00 AM! Bring a light pashmina or jacket.

The After-Plan: Don't rush back to Madrid! Spend an hour walking through the medieval streets of Brihuega; the whole town smells like flowers.

Why July is the "Golden Month"

While the season spans from June to August, the peak "deep purple" usually hits in July. Because this is a seasonal miracle, availability is extremely limited. As your boutique partners, we ensure that your flight is seamlessly integrated into your Spanish itinerary, providing that "insider" timing that separates a good trip from a legendary one.

This isn't just a tour; it’s a sensory awakening. It’s the kind of morning that reminds me why I love curating experiences in this beautiful corner of the world.

See you in the next post!
