Traveling through the Austrian Alps in winter had been on my list for a long time, and in early December I finally made it happen. I flew into Munich, which turned out to be the perfect starting point for this trip to Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria. From there, I rented a car and drove into the heart of the Austrian Alps, passing scenic mountain roads, snow-dusted landscapes, and small villages along the way. The drive was easy, well signposted, and already felt like part of the journey.

Arriving in Saalbach-Hinterglemm felt like stepping into a classic alpine postcard. Surrounded by mountains, this charming village in the Austrian Alps is best known for winter sports, but even beyond skiing, it has a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Traditional wooden houses, quiet streets, and crisp mountain air create the kind of setting that naturally makes you slow down and enjoy the moment.

What impressed me the most was the scenery. The valley is completely surrounded by alpine peaks, and wherever you go, there is always a stunning mountain view in the background. In December, the winter light, snow-covered slopes, and soft fog in the distance made everything feel almost unreal. Walking through Saalbach-Hinterglemm, even without a set plan, felt special simply because nature is always present.

One of the highlights of my trip was spending a full day skiing in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. The ski area is extensive, with wide and well-maintained slopes that make skiing enjoyable even for intermediate skiers. Gliding down the mountains with panoramic views of the Austrian Alps all around, stopping occasionally just to take it all in, was one of those moments that remind you why you travel. Between runs, taking a break at a mountain hut, warming up with traditional Austrian food and a hot drink, made the experience even better.

Outside the slopes, I explored the village and surrounding area at a relaxed pace. Taking cable cars up the mountains offers breathtaking views over the Austrian Alps, and simple walks around Saalbach-Hinterglemm feel special, with nature always close. It’s the kind of destination where you don’t need a strict itinerary, the landscape and atmosphere naturally set the rhythm of your days.

For travelers planning a winter trip to the Austrian Alps, renting a car is a great option, especially if you want flexibility and the chance to explore nearby regions of Austria. December can be quite cold, so proper winter clothing and comfortable shoes are essential. Staying at least two or three nights in Saalbach-Hinterglemm allows enough time to enjoy the village, the skiing, and the surrounding alpine scenery without rushing.

It was one of those trips that stays with you long after you leave. It’s a perfect destination for travelers who love mountain landscapes, winter travel, and authentic experiences in the Austrian Alps. If Austria is on your winter travel list, this is a place that truly deserves a spot on your itinerary.

See you in the next post!
